Not all continuing education is created equal. For social workers, high-quality CEUs aren’t just about checking a box for license renewal—they’re about learning something that truly strengthens practice, aligns with our values, and supports ethical, evidence-based care.
At SWTP CEUs, every course is built to meet the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) standards for quality and relevance. But how can you tell if a CEU is worth your time before you enroll? Here’s what to look for—and what to avoid.
What to Look For
Before you register for your next course, take a moment to review what separates a solid CE experience from a questionable one.
- Evidence-based content.
Courses should reflect current peer-reviewed research and best practices, not personal opinions or outdated theories. According to the ASWB ACE Handbook (Standard 4.1), course topics must relate directly to social work theory, ethics, and practice. - Clear, measurable learning objectives.
You should know exactly what you’ll learn—and be able to demonstrate it. ACE requires measurable objectives (Standard 4.3), meaning no vague promises to “understand” or “appreciate” a topic. - Qualified instructors.
Instructors should hold advanced training and at least five years of relevant experience—or be licensed professionals in good standing (Standard 4.5). - Transparent course details.
Ethical CE providers list the instructor’s name, learning objectives, CE credit hours, refund policies, accessibility information, and the ACE approval statement right up front (Standard 6.1–6.2). - Ethics and diversity woven in.
Social work CE must reflect the profession’s values—dignity, justice, competence, and respect for diversity (Standards 2.1–2.3).
Red Flags to Avoid
Even well-meaning providers can fall short. Keep an eye out for signs that a course may not meet professional or regulatory expectations.
- No clear connection to social work practice.
Leadership or “personal growth” courses that could apply to any profession rarely meet social work CE criteria. Look for content that directly supports your role as a social worker. - Unverified instructors.
If you can’t find information about the presenter’s credentials or license, that’s a warning sign. - No bibliography or references.
Every credible course should list its sources—and at least half should be from the past five years (Standard 4.2). - Sales pitches or product promotion.
Courses that promote specific products or services violate ACE’s prohibition on commercial bias (Standard 4.7). - Missing or misleading approval language.
“Approved by ASWB” can only be used in very specific ways. If a course or provider claims ACE status without listing a provider number or approval period, steer clear.
